In the heart of the Drâa Valley, Zagora is an unmissable stop on any journey through southern Morocco. Beneath an ochre-tinted sky, this town, swept by desert winds, offers countless opportunities for excursions—on foot, by camel, or in a 4x4—all the way to the edge of the Sahara.
Located just a few kilometers from the first dunes, Zagora reached its peak in the 11th century when the Almoravids built an imposing fortress to protect it from invaders. Today, its shaded alleyways, stretching along both sides of Avenue Mohamed V, invite visitors to wander at leisure. The town center is accessed through the majestic Ouarzazate Gate, while at the southern end stands the famous sign pointing to the road to Timbuktu—a legendary symbol marking the gateway to the desert.
